Marketing Dollars Showcase Southwest

Bay County, Fla:

Low fares create high hopes for our economy. So as Southwest starts to settle in, the Tourist Development Council works to get the word out.

“I think it’ll be a big boost to the area,” said tourist, Roger Underwood.

To market the new airport’s potentially cheaper prices, Bay and Walton County churned out some coin. The county money combined, totals about 3 million dollars. Those funds flow from tourism taxes already in place.

“We hope that this relationship will help us increase visitation, increase economic opportunity and really help the tourism industry across the board,” said TDC Executive Director, Dan Rowe.

The TDC helps to determine where those marketing dollars will go, but for now those plans are under wraps.

“I can’t talk about anything specifically that we’re doing, because we still have to work through those details,” said Rowe.

While the TDC negotiates campaign points with Southwest, fans of the panhandle come up with ideas.

Some residents want to highlight entertainment, and some tourists want to underscore the eats.

“It’s a good place to retire, and it’s a good place to come and have fun,” said Bay County resident, Emmitt Curry.

“You’ve got great seafood,” said Underwood.

Regardless of your marketing flavor, it’s all still up in the air.

The TDC believes time is of the essence. The airport opens in May so they want to get marketing negotiations wrapped up within the next few weeks.
