Bay County, Fla:

A social network helps solve crimes.

Area law enforcement logs in to Facebook to help create a safer community.

“I do check it, daily, several times a day,” said Panama City Police Department spokesperson, Sgt. Jeff Becker.

To put out public information, PCPD and the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Unit, made Facebook pages. It’s a way for officers and investigators to get the word out about crime trends, suspects and charity events while on the hunt for fans, friends and favorites.

“I think it’s another tool for us to use,” said Capt. Jimmy Stanford.

They still use traditional media, like television news, to get the word out. But, that’s a one way street of communication. Now, with just the click of a mouse, Facebook gives you the opportunity to speak out and develop a relationship with your protectors.

“It’s just nice to know that you’re in touch with the people,” said Sgt. Becker

The benefits are clear. In its first month, the Sheriff’s Office received a solid tip about an investigation directly from Facebook.

“You know I don’t think we’re reinventing anything. I just think it’s going to make things easier for us and for the public,” said Capt. Stanford.

So as you scroll and scan through sites, you might want to take your pointer through the Facebook pages of the fuzz.

To find the pages you can go to our page. Just search “WMBB-TV.” If you take a look at our favorites, you’ll find participating area law enforcement.

It’s important to note that Facebook should not be used for emergency services. For that, you still need to call 9-1-1.
