A Panama City group is making Christmas a little brighter for those without a home.

The Panama City Rescue Mission holds its 37th annual Christmas Eve Dinner today.

Every year, donors from the community provide food for dinner and dessert and volunteers serve the people attending.

Those attending say it’s more than just a hearty meal; it’s a chance for friends and fellowship.

As Christmas Eve falls on the Panama City Rescue Mission, the spirit of Christmas means giving.

Some are giving thanks for food.

“Everybody’s really grateful,” says volunteer Josh Steele. “They’re about to line up and start eating right now so yeah, I know they’re pretty grateful to have something to eat.”

Some are giving thanks for fellowship.

“It’s very nice to be around a lot of people and see how happy, see a lot of people with a lot of smiles,” says Gracie Dorsey, who stays at the mission.

And some people are giving their time and resources.

“Its one of the biggest crowds of volunteers we’ve ever had,” says Rev. Billy Fox, Director of the Rescue Mission.

With about 70 volunteers, up from about 45 last year, members of the community are making sure Christmas is special for everyone.

“This year it’s just been a little bit tighter so we though it would be a great experience for the kids to get to see it first hand and what helping somebody else is,” says volunteer Josh Bizzle.

He says his family gives every year. This year, they’re just giving time instead of money. “It’s a great opportunity not just for those in need but also for those who have who can help.”

“Time is just as valuable,” says volunteer Jimmy Gathers. “I think it shows an act of love.”

“It’s an honor for me to serve,” Steele says. “I’m just happy for what the mission is doing for the community.”

Everything from the food to the presents for adults and children are contributions from the community.

Fox says they expect to serve a total of about 650 meals today, compared to about 350 last year.
