Shocking video of a Mowat Middle School beat down is no surprise to Bay District Schools.
“This is nothing new. I think the video added so much to it, and I think the reality of it is causing people to pay attention to it more,” said Superintendent, Bill Husfelt.
The sight of kids aged 12 to 15, involved in what the Sheriff’s Office calls a gang initiation, sparks questions about student violence in Bay County.
Ninth grader, Skyler Lee, confirms it goes on.
“They’re just doing stuff, doing bad things, doing very bad things,” said Lee.
The Sheriff’s Office tries to watch the problem. There’s at least one deputy at every middle and high school in the area that makes up to a total of 19. However, the Sheriff’s Office says parents need to do some policing too.
“There place is to go there to learn, to educate, not to be raised. If that is your philosophy, you have failed, you are responsible for this, not the school, not us, you as the parent are responsible,” said Capt. Steve Harbuck.
The school district received little response after the video release, and no phone calls about this type of violence before it happened.
“We haven’t been receiving any calls about any problems. If we knew about this we would have reacted as soon as we found out about it,” said Husfelt.
That’s because some parents feel, school is a safe place.
“I trust our school district is doing everything they can and their responsibility to have it all work together the best they can,” said parent, Kim Purl.
The 7 students involved in the video were arrested, but they aren’t alone. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 422 Bay County juveniles were in deputy custody last year. So while this one video looks disturbing, it’s clear there are several issues that still must be tackled.
According to Superintendent Husfelt, there is some good to come of this bad situation: it’s got parents talking. He, along with the Sheriff’s Office feels that communication with a child is one of the best ways to prevent this type of violence.
Did the kids at the middle school write this? I really like the use of They’re incorrectly….
This is because the schools are dirty, need repair, have cockroaches and ants, and teacher pay is a joke.
Kids want to walk into a clean environment to learn.
Some schools look like dirty prisons and club houses.
What do you expect?
You reap what you sow.
None of this will change until these useless courts we have start slapping parents with some heavy fines and punishment of their own when they have to pull their delinquent in. It wouldn’t take long before these people started waking up to the fact that society holds them responsible for their kids.
Sugarbear did your daughter report it to administration or to an adult at Mowat? Did you call the school and speak to someone? The previous incident took less than 2 minutes, there are 1100 students at Mowat and as the article mentioned ONE sheriff. If your child mentions something they have seen or know about tell their teacher, have the child come to the front office. Like stated numerous times there has to be communication.
most people would be suprised at what kinda things go on at schools here and all over the US. daddys little girl turns into a slut, guys turn into stalkers, its a shame that society has turned so perverted. there have been fights at school since early times, its how boys and men settled differences, after the fight they were still friends in some instances. now you have wanna be thugs bringing knives and worse guns, what has gone wrong with soiety??
my question to school officials and the police is my daughter goes to mowat and she tells us gang members are still there another initiation happened today. how can they say they have everyone out of the school. this puts my baby at risk and i dont like it.i am ready to put her in private school. i didn’t have to worry about this when i went to bay county schools…....
parent are not teaching their kids any respect, or keeping any type of control over their kids. So when they want to do any violence send them to jail. If they want to do the crime than they can do the time.

I’m not sure who is at fault here but there has to be a change. There should NEVER be THAT many students in one bathroom at any time. Red Flag!!! As a parent who talks to my children frequently I realize that they are not angels and that I can’t be on duty with them both day and night while my husband and I have to work to put food on the table, so we rely on the adults at the school to provide and maintain a SAFE environment for our children in our absence which we thought was reasonable and possible. Unfortunately this is a different day and age and apparently you must now be in two different places at the same time. My husband and I have instilled in our children what we expect and what we will not tolerate but we are the parents of (2)children and not the entire school so we are left wondering what more can we do?
