It’s the most wonderful time of the year…or at least that’s what we’re told the holidays are supposed to be.  Many however, suffer stress and depression during the season.

From finances to large gatherings, there are many reason’s people feel stressed during the holiday season.
The key is to recognize the issues and have a game plan to deal with them.

Dr. James Hord, a clinical psychologist with Psychological Services of West Florida says we learn about holidays and set expectations in our childhood.

We then rebuild those traditions with our family structures.

As life goes on, things inevitably change and that’s when stress and depression can set in.

Dr. Hord tells us, “I think you have to recognize you don’t always see eye to eye.  I think you have to realize the differences between what you remember as seasonal activities and what you’re experiencing now based on someone else’s expectations.”

Some people also think about loved ones who are far away or who have passed away.  Dr. Hord says it’s okay to cry and be sad.

“You’re recognizing the enjoyment that you used to have if nothing else.  But it’s not okay to focus on that as the total experience of the holiday.  It’s supposed to be a joyous period of time.  It’s something we ought to strive to keep that way.”

The Mayo Clinic offers some tips for coping with holiday stress and depression.

First, acknowledge your feelings.  You can’t force yourself to be happy.

Set aside differences.  Try to accept family members and friends as they are.

Stick to a budget.  Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can spend.

Don’t abandon healthy habits.  Overindulgence in food and drinks can add to your stress and guilt.

Finally, learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed.

If you still find yourself feeling sad or anxious, losing sleep or unable to face routine chores despite your best efforts, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
