Bay County Traffic Engineering has added eight new cameras, aimed at reducing motorists’ travel times, to the county’s Web site at www.baycountyfl.gov.
“The cameras that we’ve added to the Web site are located at highly trafficked areas in Bay County,” Traffic Engineer Keith Bryant said. “Hopefully they’ll help motorists assess traffic problems and determine the best route to travel before they even leave the house.”
The new cameras visible on the Web site are in addition to eight already in place offering real-time video of the Hathaway Bridge corridor.
The cameras are part of the county’s Intelligent Transportation System. The ITS is a program, primarily funded by the state Department of Transportation, that uses fiber optic cable connected to traffic cameras to allow for remote timing adjustments to traffic signals. Bay County Traffic Management is in the process of synchronizing traffic signals along major corridors equipped with the traffic cameras.
“We have synchronized along Highway 77, and we’ve so far seen a 20 percent reduction in travel times there,” Bryant said. The traffic team is currently working to synchronize lights along 23rd Street. Bryant said he hopes to have 50 signals coordinated by the end of 2010.
Data transmitted by the cameras is not recorded or saved and cannot be used to monitor traffic violations or for accident investigations, though it can assist law enforcement in responding to traffic accidents, Bryant said.
The new locations added to the Web site include:
23rd Street at 15th Street
Cherry Street at Tyndall Parkway
Jenks Avenue at Baldwin Road
State Road 77 at County Road 390
U.S. 231 at East Avenue
Jenks Avenue at 15th Street at U.S. 231
U.S. 231 at State Road 77
23rd Street at Jenks Avenue
I bet a lot of that traffic going north on 77 is headed to Walmart, before they just went down 23rd st to the old one.
This is great. I hope more cameras are added. A PTZ option online in the future would be awesome too.
the lights on hwy77 have been synchronized? could have fooled me the traffic is worse now than before? and its not that there are more motorist. if there is someone sitting there watching these traffic lights, they need to be fired or at the very least given the glasses they so badly need. this was a waste of money so far!!!

They do great job for me traveling north on transmitter to 390 at 5:30 every morning. Can I send them a box of candy, roses or a case of beer? I was wondering if they could re-time the lights temporarily at Baldwin and Jenks Ave until the construction is done. It’s kind of wierd to sit at the light for a long time when there is no cross traffic. Cheers…
