Plans to encourage more eco-tourism on Panama City Beach are progressing as the beach trail system reaches another phase of development.
Panama City Beach mayor Gayle Oberst says the trail project is going well and construction crews are almost finished with the third mile. The trail project started about nine years ago in Frank Brown Park. Now it runs along Highway 79 too.
Monday, construction crews were getting ready to begin the fourth mile of the project. Upcoming plans include a wooden bridge and more miles of paved ground. By 2011 Mayor Oberst says the trail will have about 11 miles completed.
Phase four of the project will extend into a 3,000 acre nature park. The nature park will be situated on the same site as a wet weather discharge area. Oberst expects the site will be perfect for ecotourism.
She says the new trail will be something both residents and visitors can enjoy.
“It’s great if you come here to live, and you have the outdoors and the aesthetic value,” Oberst said. “It really adds to the quality of life, and it’ll be great for the tourists as well because you can walk, bike, and enjoy it.”
The completed trail will stretch through Panama City Beach to the West Bay. Mayor Oberst says the completed trails in Frank Brown Park and along highway 79 are open to the public now.
