A security breach in another part of the country is having an impact on the local area, as Innovations Federal Credit Union alerts its customers that some debit card numbers may have been stolen.

Several customers received a letter explaining a network intrusion that happened between May and November 2008.  The breach happened to a service Visa uses, called Heartland Payment Systems.  It was discovered during an investigation.

Innovations is issuing new debit cards and pin numbers for everyone affected by the breach.  Cards have already been sent out to all customers whose numbers were on the list of those compromised.  While some customers say they are concerned about personal information, they say situations like this are becoming more common.

“I think that’s just the way of the world these days so you just have to deal with it,” said Innovations customer Deborah Lawrence.

Bank representatives say even if cards were fraudulently used, Visa is responsible for replenishing any money lost.  So far, they do not know of cards that have been used in our area.
