When you walk into Panama City businesses you will probably hear Christmas music. Today residents took advantage of the day off to get a jump start of some of their Christmas shopping. Shoppers at the mall today say it’s all about browsing. You have to shop around to find deals. And shoppers say that despite the bad economy, it is possible to have a great Christmas on a small budget.
It’s officially Christmas shopping season and cars pack the Panama City Mall parking lot today.
Panama City resident Carrie Baker has one gift left to buy for her sister. She has 11 siblings and 42 neices and nephews to buy for: “I’m a sales expert. I look for the sales, then I look for the 15 percent off, then I look for people to send me things in the mail so I can get an additional amount off.”
Other shoppers are using different methods. Sabrina Pitts’ family plans to focus on good quality less quantity: “Normally they get so much they don’t even know what they have, and it won’t be like that this year…at all!”
Paul Underwood handles customer solutions at best buy. He says the store’s bundling packages are very popular: “In general, packages; we’ve been doing a lot of packages lately. You know just complete bundles so that when people come in they get not only the unit they’re looking for but everything to make it work.”
Stores drag down prices during the holidays to compete with each other so shoppers’ bottom line of the season: shop around for the best price.
Many shoppers say that layaway plans help too. Stores like Sears and Walmart offer a payment plan so you can reserve your gifts and pay a percentage of the price each week up until Christmas. That way you can still get nice gifts for your family but still avoid crazy credit card bills that come with the New Year.
Walmart does not have a layaway plan, they have not had layaway for a while i think you have your story mixed up as kmart does.
I know this because my wife works for Walmart.
I start my Christmas shopping on the weekend following Thanksgiving, and not before, I dont want to hear Christmas music until after the Thanksgiving holiday, if they keep starting early every year, in a few more years will will be starting the xmas shopping season in march, get a clue retailers, too much of a good thing can be come really annoying.Do us all a big favor and hold off on the music till black friday, we may have to see all the xmas decorations, but we shouldnt have to be annoyed by the music till then, by then its 4 weeks to go and christmas music is nice to hear.

Well said, Scavenger. I really get aggrevated by these stores that start putting out Christmas junk already by the first of September, some even the week before. That’s one of the biggest reasons I do very little, if any shopping anymore. If I can get it on-line and shipped to my door, why fight the traffic and crowds? By the time Christmas does get here I’m so tired of it I’m just glad it’s over. Sadly, as you mentioned, it may not be long before they start this nonsense in March, or even worse just do it year ‘round. I’m not a Scrooge by any means I just get tired of it running for so long. But people have been complaining about this and the commercialization of Christmas for many years and all it does is get worse so…..
