Working out doesn’t have to be work! Join others who’ve learned to have fun exercising with Zumba ® Fitness classes. Beginning January 5, the class will meet every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the UF/County Extension Service building located on State Hwy 83 North at the south end of the Fairgrounds parking area. Tuesday’s one-hour Zumba ® Fitness class is jointly sponsored and supported by the UF/Walton County Extension Service and the Walton County Health Department’s Chronic Disease Prevention Program. This dance-style fitness class is accompanied by upbeat Latin, Hawaiian, and international music that incorporates merengue, salsa, calypso, reggae, cha-cha, hip-hop, belly dancing, samba and flamenco. The “pay-as-you-go” entry fee is $5 per class, but a discount card for five classes is offered to reduce the per-class rate to $4 each.
Participants of all ages and fitness levels enjoy its energizing Latin-flavor music and movements with personalized modifications to meet individual needs. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Research has shown that physical activity reduces risk for chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the US Health and Human Service, adults must include two-and-a-half hours of vigorous and/or moderate aerobic activity per week, in order to receive its health benefits. As of July 2009, Zumba® Fitness classes are being taught at over 40,000 locations in 75 countries, with over five million participants weekly. This party-style fitness craze has been featured on the Today Show, CNN, ABC News, CBS Early Show, Cosmopolitan Magazine, the New York Times and the Washington Post. As always, it is recommended that you consult your physician before attempting any exercise program.
Instructor Melissa Rodrigues is an Island girl; that is, born and raised in the islands of Hawaii! She loves to dance to the sultry beat of the tropical drums in her native Hawaiian songs. Melissa is a certified Zumba ® Fitness Instructor and leads several other Zumba ® Fitness classes in the area, including Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the DeFuniak Springs Recreation/Teen Center. Melissa can be reached at or by calling . Reservations are not required. Just show up and join in the fun.
