A feud turns fatal in Panama City Beach.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Andrew Grande, a suspect in a physical disturbance died as deputies attempted to make an arrest.
This is a tragic situation for our officers, a tragic situation for this young man and his family,” said Sheriff Frank McKeithen.
Early this morning, camera crews from Zoo productions, captured the scene as deputies stopped Grande in the parking lot of the Executive Inn. As deputies struggled to make an arrest, the 23 year old placed a bag in his mouth.
“At this point, they think he has swallowed maybe cocaine or some other unknown substance. In fact they think he’s actually OD’ed on something,” said McKeithen.
To gain control, deputies deployed a taser, but Grande, was able to pull the probes out.
“The subject immediately removes the barbs himself and appears to be having some type of attack, appears to be choking,” said McKeithen.
The Sheriff says, that shortly after the tazing, Grande began to suffocate. That’s when deputies performed the Heimlich maneuver but were unsuccessful.
Eventually, EMS pulled marijuana out of Grande’s airway.
“These guys watched this person die pretty much and there was absolutely nothing they could do,” said McKeithen.
The three deputies involved in the arrest, are on administrative leave, but the investigation isn’t over. The Sheriff asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to look into the incident.
“If he’d have allowed them to handcuff him, it would’ve been over. There would have been no tazing, no resisting, and this would not have happened,” said McKeithen.
Sheriff McKeithen extends his sympathy to the Grande Family.
Grande had a minimal criminal history.
epicwil,
Do you believe taser use is justified in the two deaths since bcso aquired them? You dont see any connection? You as a christian believe it is okay to kill if it is someone labeled a criminal? If a taser was not used he would probaly still be alive. The taser is classified as a means of torture by the U.N. and you are okay with that?
I believe it shows that bcso really wants to kill people and has found a way to get away with it as it is difficult to prove.

I apologizes for the typographical errors in the previous post.
As a citizen of Bay County, and even a person of Christian beliefs, It saddens me to see someone die especially while dealing with law enforcement. I am also in law enforcememnt and I see things of this nature all the time. It doesn’t suprise me to see the force used against Andrew. I beleieve what they did was not only neccessary, but reasonable. We can no more blame the deputies that encountered Andrew than can we blame Andrew himself. The facts are the facts, marijuana is illegal and was present on Mr. Grande. Had the deputies known he had attempted to swollow the bag, they may have decided to not tase him. Still, Andrew did resist the officers and they legally were required to take action. WJHG showed the video of the event, but it was nothing that public could not see themselves. WJHG warned the viewers about what they were going to see. My prayers go out to the family. Andrew made a mistake, but dont we all? No one deserves to lose their life the way Andrew did. God bless him!

Another casualty in the “WAR ON DRUGS”
this is needless and tragic end to this young mans life.
Over what? pot? come on, LEGALIZE!!! NOW!!!
wmbb, i just recieved a private email about this story, because of my statement, it was from someone named scott tolar, email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) , please everyone send this guy a personal message to let him know how much of a wrong move his friend made, maybe you will change his life also, ya, i believe you cared about your friend, did he make a stupid move… YES!! if he hadnt made that move you could be at his house today, life is a bunch of chioices, he made the wrong one, how can you defend that? please if you want to reply to me clean it up and put it on here!
im sure that it will some how be a race thing that caused his death when it was his fault it sad what the usa is being you do something dumb and just play the race sad sad sad
Message here: Don’t deal with drugs that are illegal! You will pay a “High” price for your getting high!
he died because he was stupid, wasnt the police’s fault. if the guy wouldnt have resisted he wouldnt have been tased and wouldnt be dead, put the blame where it deserves to be placed. yes, i feel for the family, just because he made a bad choice doesnt reflect on the family.
I would at least like to thank this particular station for not showing the video tape of the guy basically fighting for his life then ultimately dying on tv. I think the other local station made a very poor choice to show the graphic video and for that reason I will never watch that station’s newscast again. Can you imagine what the young man’s family must be going through if they saw that video on tv?? What did they have to gain by being so sensational? Someone died, they chose to show the whole ugly episode on tv, and to be honest, I’ve never had anything upset me more than watching the unnecessary death of someone because a police office didn’t know you don’t do the heimlich so high up on the chest and in the end, was it really necessary to tase him in the first place? Bad move, BCSO and WJHG.
Someone at WMBB needs to proof the story before posting. Your quoting Grande when it should be the Cop. How can he “OD or something” seconds after putting it in his mouth. That’s a crock of S*@$. I guess that thought process explains a lot about the cop. That’s 3 deaths on the Sheriff’s hands over Pot. This poor kid along with Barbara and Ken Jenks.
I remember seeing the drug unit (ran by Mckeithen) hauling these criminals to jail.

After seeing the video I must say that it does not appear that the taser use was a major contributor in this death and that it appeared the main problem was the officers trying to figure out what was wrong with the man and I dont fault them for that. They tried to save him but did not know how.
I am strongly opposed to taser use and I jumped the gun on this one.
