Princesses, parents and everyone in between are enjoying a brand new Disney experience with the latest animated movie, The Princess and the Frog.
Princess Tiana is a new princess for a new generation.
She’s the first new Disney Princess since Mulan in 1998 but she’s done in the same classic animation.
“Going along with the classic look of what the Disney princesses look like, the traditional animation is probably the best way to go about it,” says Disney fan Monique Jones.
For some, like Jones, Princess Tiana is more than just another pretty face; she’s their face.
“I just remember growing up and being so excited to see all the different Disney princesses be represented,” Jones says, “And to finally have a princess that actually looks like me, to be included in that, is very, very exciting.”
She says she’s glad her friends’ kids will have a princess who looks like them, an opportunity she didn’t have as a child.
“You couldn’t really go to a store and buy a costume during Halloween of someone that looked like you, you’d have to explain, ‘I’m Snow White, but I don’t like Snow White,’ so… I’m glad that Disney has taken this opportunity to reflect all of their fans.”
With famous voices like Oprah and Anika Noni Rose (who attended Florida A&M University) as Princess Tiana, and brand new Disney songs, the movie is guaranteed to win hearts while sending a message.
“Her dream is to work hard and own her own restaurant so I think that’s a good message for kids,” says Bobbi Ward with Once Upon a Dream Vacations.
There will be several activities for kids at the Grand Theater Saturday, including the chance to win a 2-day Disney resort stay from Once Upon a Dream Vacations.
Saturday, Grand Theater at Pier Park:
10:40 a.m. – Frogs arrive from Zoo World
11:00 a.m. – Princess for a Day begins, including manicures, hair cuts, pictures and pizza
12:00 p.m. – Kissing Booth
3:30 p.m. – Princess Costume Contest
Sunday, Grand Theater at Pier Park:
12:00 p.m. – Silent Auction begins
