On Thursday, December 3, 2009, Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Investigators with the Jackson County Drug Task Force, with assistance from the Office of the Inspector General, concluded an investigation into the introduction of contraband into Jackson Correctional Institution (JCI) in Malone, Florida.
During the investigation it was learned that Correctional Officer Gerald Edward Williams Jr., 25, of Russ Street in Marianna, Florida, was introducing contraband into JCI. An arrangement was made by Williams with an inmate incarcerated at JCI to introduce a cellular telephone into the prison for him in exchange for $500.
On the morning of December 3, 2009, Williams traveled to a location near Hwy 71 South and I-10 to receive possession of the cellular phone and $500 as his payment for introducing the contraband. Williams met with an undercover police officer that supplied Williams with the phone and money. After departing the meeting, Williams was placed under arrest for Attempt to Introduce Contraband into a State Facility and Receipt of Unlawful Compensation for the money that he received for his cooperation.
Through further investigation it was also learned that Williams was in possession of letters that had been provided to him by inmates to mail for them. In addition to his other charges, Williams is additionally charged with Removal of Written Communication from a State Correctional Institution.
Williams was transported to the Jackson County Jail and housed there to await first appearance on his charges.
The Jackson County Drug Task Force is the combined effort of the Cottondale Police Department, Graceville Police Department, Marianna Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
