The name of the new airport is a sensitive subject, but the airport board continues to attempt to create an identity.

Today members held a meeting and discussed street names along with a new airport code. To come up with the names they went around the room. Members threw out ideas and the audience responded.

The suggestions for the main drag started with native plants, like Cypress, Sawgrass or Palmetto Road, and moved on to more familiar names.  After some discussion, the board picked a top three. The number one choice is St. Andrews Bay Parkway, followed by West Bay Parkway and last up is Osprey Parkway.

The board also picked a new airport code. This choice was more limited than the last because members had to pick from a list chosen by the FAA.

The code members want is TFB. They feel it could help market the area with slogans like “the fun beach” or “the Florida beach.”

Members say they recognize the actual airport name Northwest Florida-Panama City International is a sore subject so they plan to discuss it again.

“Still a good name. We may end up with the name we got, we may not. That will be taken up at our next meeting,” said Joe Tannehill.

The purpose of picking the names now is to make sure the airport address will soon be on the books. The opening date is set for May.

greenshirt, do you really think any of them give a crap about what the people of Bay County think?  They are politicians and that should tell you the people don’t matter except at election time.  The name should be St. Jo iinternational as they are the ones that will ultimately benefit most from it.  They will make millions.

“TFB” now, eh?  That’s FAA code for “Tyndall airForce Base”.. ha.  They could’ve left that as PFN… it costs a lot of money to get those letters changed.  Waste of taxpayers’ or the county’s money if you ask me.  People don’t choose airports based on the airport code.  Especially when it’s not a major one like ATL.

Yes, please, board members, change that name.

I rather like Osprey Parkway for the road… :)

There were quite a few names submitted here. I guess the board of commissioners doesn’t get their information off the web.
