The proposal to move Panama City outgoing mail operations to Pensacola continues to raise concerns. U.S. Postal Service employees say while official have called the proposed changes “transparent” they could affect postal customers more than expected.
“If they can save a half a million dollars and have minimal impact on customer service they’ve got to look at that,” says Joseph Breckenridge, USPS Communications.
Breckenridge says the proposal will save them money. Others disagree.
“If they go through with this we don’t believe it will work,” says Andy Georgiadis. “They believe it will work.”
Approximately 65 outgoing mail operations at various locations around the country are included on a list on USPS.com for considerations to be consolidated with other locations.
Of those whose consolidation has been approved, the projected annual savings range from $1.1 million all the way up to $9.3 million.
Panama City’s projected savings: a mere $500,000.
“You make a difference not by saving just big chunks in a few places but by saving smaller amounts in a lot of places,” says Breckenridge.
Another concern is the impact on delivery time.
“About some 4,000 pieces that are presently given overnight service would go down to two-day service,” Breckenridge says.
“One of our employees was talking to his wife today and said that her company depends on overnight service to Tallahassee,” Georgiadis says. “If they don’t have overnight service to Tallahassee they’re going to have to move to Fed-Ex and the post office is going to lose that revenue.”
The USPS public meeting on the proposal is January 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Bay County Fairgrounds.
Officials say the public’s input will be considered in any final determination.

All I mail is Christmas cards, if this consolidation means less junk mail, that is a good thing. I even registered to not receive junk mail but I still get a little. In this internet age, the USPS needs to adapt. Most people don’t write letters any more and snail mail is outdated.

Brian7, I beg to disagree with you. I do most of my mailing through my local Post Office. Even though I have Internet capabilities and use it extensively, I still write letters because it is more personal than a cold e-mail. But, this is going to happen because past experience has taught me one thing: when a bureaucrat makes up it’s mind only God himself can change it no matter whose lives it wrecks. Logic has nothing to do with it. If Pensacola is the worst then why not transfer their operations to PC instead? Sounds to me like there’s more to this than Breckenridge is telling. Like maybe a buddy in Pensacola or something. It has been known to happen….just speculating, of course. Otherwise, why shut down an efficient site to move it to a worse one?
