The start of a new year means new goals, and for many that means fitness.
“New years resolutions, everybody trying to get in shape for the new year and get healthy,” said Anytime Fitness manager Victoria Richards.
She says they signed 150 new customers last January. That’s a 50 percent increase compared to any other month. But according to several surveys, more than 90 percent of New Year’s Resolutions go unfulfilled. Richards says they have about 400 inactive members this year.
“A lot of people fail because of the pressure they put on themselves in thinking about what bad is going to happen if I break it instead of what good is going to happen if I keep it,” said fitness trainer Jessica Heyman.
She says there are some key things anyone can do to help stay motivated:
- Tell friends and family who can help keep you accountable.
- Focus on the positive
- Break goals into smaller goals and set deadlines
- keep a journal of your progress.
Heyman says it may also be helpful to hire a trainer.
“I think a trainer helps hold people accountable because we set up session and you don’t have to do it on your own,” she said, “plus you’ve paid for it so you don’t want that money to go to waste.”
Some have no trouble staying motivated, but have questions when it comes to membership. Richards says there are some things to look out for when it comes to signing a contract:
- Choose a gym close to home
- Keep in mind hours and holiday schedules
- Be aware of cancellation fees
With a little dedication and motivation, anyone can have a physically fit 2010.
