High waters are an obvious hazard. Today, an out-of-town driver blindly drove straight into a ditch. The car was completely submerged.
“That’s not good,” said driver, Jodie Williams.
“It’s unbelievable it really is,” said driver, AJ Kearce.
Thousands of other drivers dodged pools of water all day after heavy rains pounded the pavement in Panama City.
“It’s just one of those deals, you’ve got to use caution,” said Sgt. Jeff Becker of the Panama City Police.
For some people, the danger is hard to see. Flood water can be deceptively deep. But, locals say, they’re used to it.
“It’s not anything I haven’t seen before, I know to avoid it,” said Williams.
Rough patches ran across major roads like 15th Street, Beck Avenue and 23rd Street. Throughout the day, Panama City police kept watch over the waters.
“We don’t want anybody getting hurt, so we just try to get to those areas, try to direct traffic or shut the roadway down,” said Becker.
As the stream-like streets dried up, traffic got back to normal. Taylor’s Towing in Panama City had to tow about 6 or 7 cars as a direct result of the rain.
