A dog that was exposed to a rabid raccoon on January 7, 2010 is missing from the owner’s Granberry Drive residence East of Marianna where it was quarantined. It is unclear at this time if the animal escaped quarantine or was stolen. The animal is described as a four and a half month old Husky mix with white and grey fur, blue eyes and was wearing a red collar. Jackson County Animal Control is working with the Jackson County Health Department to locate and trap the dog. Any type of contact with this animal should be avoided since the possibility exists that it could be capable of transmitting the virus. The rabies virus is shed through the saliva. The fact that the animal does not appear to be symptomatic does not mean that it is not capable of virus transmission. Salivary contact with open wounds such as cuts or scratches or mucus membranes such as the eyes, nose or mouth offers the potential opportunity for infection. If you think you may have been exposed to this animal you are urged to seek medical attention immediately. Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of this animal is asked to contact the Environmental Public Health Division of the Jackson County Health Department at during normal business hours or our answering service 24 hours a day / 7 days a week at .
