Panama City Beach officials are making more efforts to improve the beach area. The city pier in front of the Pier Park shopping center is one of the areas under construction.
The pier and the fencing that currently surrounds the area is named Russell Fields Pier. The area is located on the south side of Front Beach Road and will be home to a new restaurant, restrooms and a bait and tackle shop. Oberst says the new area will include a place for people to sit and relax near the pier too.
Russell Fields Per is being designed to resemble the style of the Pier Park shopping center, right across the street.
The pier is open already, and people are being charged a small fee to walk on it. All this money collected from visitors will go towards a pier fund to help build the other projects.
“We’ll have a boardwalk that will have umbrellas and tables so that you can go out and sit, and watch the sunset,” Oberst said. “Or, you can go fishing on the pier or take a stroll out there. So it will be a really attractive area, but also a really fun area.”
Oberst says the area will be finished before summer 2010.
