Port St. Joe, Fla:An unsolved Port St. Joe murder case continues almost a year after it happens.
Mary Thomas’s death leaves family and law enforcement frustrated.
“It’s so hard… I just want to know why… why… what would make you do something to hurt her?” said Thomas’s daughter, Etasha Gray.
After hundreds of interviews, there are still no leads into the 56 year old’s death.
“It’s hard for you to go a whole year without knowing what happened. It’s such a small town it’s hard for me to believe that no one knows anything,” said Gray.
Gray and her family reported their mom missing in late February of 2009. They say she had a life long battle with drugs, but that didn’t stop her from being a loving mother and grandmother.
“No matter what a person does, no one deserves to get murdered and thrown in the woods like they were a piece of meat,” said Gray.
Almost a month after Mary went missing, her body was found in the woods. She was wrapped in plastic, naked, and decomposing, making it impossible to determine cause of death.
“She had been out there in the woods for god knows how long and her body you couldn’t even see her,” said Gray.
Gulf County Sheriff Joe Nugent says no evidence means no answers.
“Nothing like this happens without somebody knowing what happened she didn’t get over there in the woods by herself. Somebody took her over there,” said Sheriff Nugent.
He says they have a person of interest that hasn’t been released at this time, but don’t have enough evidence to charge him.
“We can’t prove anything right now. We’ve talked to that person several times he’s asked to speak to a lawyer right now so that’s stopped our contact with him,” he said.
