The devastation surrounding the earthquake in Haiti hits a little closer to home for one Panama City Beach church.
Members of Eastgate Christian Fellowship church found out that two of their missionaries were badly injured in the Haiti earthquake last week.
Liz Livingston is a member of Eastgate Chirstian Fellowship church. She makes a phone call and logs onto Facebook every day to see how the Lataillades are doing.
Patrick and Barb Lataillade have lived in Port Au Prince, Haiti doing mission work for more than 20 years. They build churches, train preachers and set up schools. They couldn’t know that after a bad earthquake, their world would fall.
Eastgate Fellowship Church Mission Coordinator Dan Crute, says the Lataillades’ house was completely destroyed in the quake.
Patrick was trapped underneath the rubble. Eventually he and his wife were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Medical in Miami, where they’re being treated.
“The last we heard, Barb was in surgery yesterday and they weren’t quite sure where she was going to be recovering in the trauma center or going back to the regular medical room,” Eastgate church member Liz Livingston said.
Barb had to have her right foot amputated. Doctors removed Patrick’s right arm.
The Lataillades were in Panama City just last year promoting their mission, “Living Word Ministries.”
“They’ve come here a number of times over the years and just shared about the work that their doing, and we are providing them regular support, a monthly support for probably the last seven or eight years,” Crute said.
Now that monetary support is going toward helping them get well. Church members are providing financial help with all the medical bills.
“We love them. They’re the world to us,” Livingston said. “They are a very strong couple that gave their lives and their love for the Haitian people.”
Because of patient confidentiality the church is relying on Hope Builders International to get updates on any medical progress. That organization is the main sponsor of “Living Word Ministries.”
