Tax talk continues at a Bay District School Board workshop Wednesday.
The board voted last week to add the additional half-cent sales tax reforrendum to voter ballots in August.
The tax would off-set a millage increase approved in the fall of 2009.
But property owners say the buck stops here.
Plan B: the half-cent sales tax.
“Either the property owners, just the property owners, will pay for that through their millage rate or everyone wills share. And that will be the half cent sales tax,” says school board member Donna Allen.
They can’t make promises but Bay District Superintendent Bill Husfelt seems sure, saying, “We’re going to lower the millage next year.”
The school board says the money for facility upkeep has to come from somewhere or the kids will suffer.
The board says school buildings have an average life of 20 years and general upkeep is like an oil change; it’s cheaper in the long run than buying a new engine.
But the board needs a plan, people and pocketbooks if it wants the public’s vote to add half a cent to their sales tax.
Wednesday, board members discussed the plan to develop a Citizen’s Oversight Committee. It will be comprised of community members and business leaders to endorse and explain the tax trade-off.

We need the half cent sales tax so ALL can share, renters, tourists, everyone, instead of just propert owners. This is a fair tax on all, not just some.
The schools need it! They need to raise teacher pay, also and hire more janitors. Repairs and paint, landscaping are greatly needed.
Any extra money for education of children is money well spent.
