Holiday air travel has been a nightmare all over the country this weekend. The blizzard that hit the northeast is out of the way, but it’s left some travelers behind.
Even at the Panama City- Bay County International Airport, people who want to get their holidays started have to wait until Monday or later to get flights.
Elizabeth Pardieu is an anxious traveler trying to get home to New York for Christmas. She’s been stuck in Panama City trying to get a flight out.
“We just came to visit our grandparents for a quick weekend trip and it’s turned into a fiasco basically,” said Pardieu.
Her flight got cancelled due to the blizzard. Her home is buried under a foot of snow right now.
“We’re just trying to get home so hopefully we make it today,” she said.
Close to 5,000 flights around the country were cancelled over the weekend. Now all those people are trying to get to their holiday destinations. The flights cancelled first, get first priority to re-book.
“We’re kind of the strap hangers just trying to fill in spaces where we can. We don’t have a seat assignment out of Atlanta so I don’t know how confident that makes me,” she said.
While all f the flights out of the Panama City airport are on time right now, Delta says the Atlanta airport is backed up.
Those passengers heading west are hopeful they won’t have delays.
“So far it’s been pretty uneventful but it’s just now started so we’ll see how it goes from here,” said holiday traveler, Shaun Little.
According to AAA, travel is up almost 2% this year compared to last year, despite the increased cost of travel. More than eight million people plan to fly.
