Perth Wildcats guard Jermaine Beal looks to lift his side against Melbourne.
< powerful > HE may have celebrated his 27th birthday the former day , but it certainly hasn’t been a laid-back week for Jermaine Beal.
The Perth Wildcats guard and his teammates have been subjected to a pair of gruelling training sessions tracking their 22- score loss to Townsville on Sunday, which left the defending NBL champs with a 3-2 record.
Beal said the tough session was “much-needed” after the squad ’s disappointing implementation in Queensland.
“A lot of things went wrong,” he said .
“Our offence was struggling, our defence was pretty bad, (and a) lack of energy,” he said .
Coach Trevor Gleeson was furious with the squad ’s implementation and Beal said they certainly felt his anger.
“Trev has his moments where he’s pretty angry and his moments where he’s happy,” Beal said .
“In this respect, we lost by about 20, so I don’t think he’ll be coming to practice happy.”
Following a testing session on the practice court today, Beal was presented with a cake and had his teammates sing Happy Birthday.
Beal, who was one of the Cats’ stand-out performers on last weekend’s path trip split, said the best was yet to come from the reigning champions in the young NBL season.
“We’re five games in; our teammates are still realizing the offence. Hopefully we can get a win on Sunday and keep things going in the right way,” he said .
“Right now, our focal point is just getting better. I feel if we get better, the standings will look after themselves.”
Former Wildcat James Ennis made headlines last week with a monster slam dunk in his NBA debut with Miami, and Beal revealed he still kept in touch with his ex-teammate.
“That dunk was nasty,” Beal said .
“I texted him after and told him I saw it and he was such as ‘Man, thank you, it’s a blessing’. I told him I was proud of him.”
The Wildcats forge ahead their title defence at home to Melbourne on Sunday.

Activision Profit Beats Expectations on Sales of Destiny.
Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI), the biggest U.S. video-game maker, reported third-quarter sales and profit that beat analysts’ estimates , crediting the new Destiny sci-fi shooter title and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
Profit excluding some items rose to 23 cents a share in the third quarter, the Santa Monica, California-based company said the former day in a statement. Analysts had projected 13 cents, the average of 23 estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Chief Executive Officer Bobby Kotick said the record results were driven by Destiny, which was introduced in September and now has 9.5 million registered users, making it the top new franchise in history. He also credited powerful sales of current titles, including the online World of Warcraft, which reported a sequential jump in users ahead of an update.
“The over- implementation is largely the outcome of the incredible achievement of Destiny and the continued achievement of Hearthstone,” Kotick said in an interview. “It’s really significant for us to forge ahead to demonstrate that we have the ability to successfully manage our current franchises, but also release really compelling new IP.”
Revenue, also reported on an adjusted basis, grew 20 percent to $1.17 billion, topping analysts’ projections of $1 billion. The company said in September that buyers invested $325 million on Destiny in the first five days of release.
Activision gained 3.8 percent to $20.70 in extended trading after the announcement . The stock fell 1.7 percent to $19.95 at the close in New York and is up 12 percent this year.
Activision is putting out new games for a number of established franchises this year. They include Skylanders Trap Team, a combination video and action figure game.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the latest installment of that franchise, was released Nov. 3. A lawsuit from former Panamanian President Manuel Noriega claiming his image had been improperly used in a version of the game without permission was dismissed, the company said on Oct. 28.
The company’s guidance for the fourth quarter falls short of analysts’ projections. Activision projects profit of 86 cents, excluding items, and revenue of $2.2 billion on that basis. Analysts estimate 94 cents and $2.34 billion in revenue .
Hull loses out on HMS Illustrious tourism bid.Hull has lost out in its bid to turn aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious into a tourist attraction on the city’s waterfront.
Hull City Council confirmed it had missed out on the Ministry of Defence shortlist for the decommissioned ship.
The vessel would have been docked next to aquarium The Deep, for Hull’s City of Culture celebrations in 2017.
The 20,000-tonne carrier has been retired from the Royal Navy after 32 years of service.
Labour kingpin of the council Stephen Brady said he was “disappointed” at the decision.
“We’ve had a significant amount of public bolster throughout,” he said .
“And although we gave it our best shot, it was made clear during the bidding process that the MoD intended to strip the vessel of its historic assets, and were unwilling to provide any long-term funding which, in fact, made it economically unviable as a heritage attraction.
Mr Brady said the city intended to forge ahead with its plans to develop a cruise ship terminal.

Hong Kong Regulator Completes Work for Shanghai Exchange Link.
Hong Kong’s securities regulator has finished preparatory work for a planned trading link with Shanghai’s stock exchange.
“The SFC has finalized all the regulatory arrangements necessary for the launch of Stock Connect and we hope it will be launched sooner instead than later,” Jonathan Li, a Hong Kong-based spokesman at the Securities and Futures Commission, said by phone.
Hong Kong & Exchanges Clearing Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Charles Li said Oct. 27 regulators hadn’t signed off on the link and he had no idea when it will begin . Brokers were expecting to make their first cross-border trades this month. Equities in Hong Kong and Shanghai rallied today.
The SFC’s comments helped fuel the advance, said David Welch, the Hong Kong-based head of equity sales trading at Reorient Group Ltd. Optimism that China’s central bank will ease policies is also boosting shares, he said .
While authorities said in April they may make further announcements on timing, they haven’t given any more details beyond their original statement that the link would begin in about six months.
The Hang Seng Index (HSI) and the Shanghai Composite Index both climbed 1.4 percent at the midday break.
